It is 1995 in Madison, Wisconsin. Aubrey, a fastidious 14-year-old Ojibwe girl, finds solace in the predictable patterns of meteorology after her father abandons her family. Convinced that she is the reason her father left, Aubrey goes on a mission to prove her worth by winning the National Science Fair and appearing on her father’s favorite TV show. To get there, the Aubrey will have to partner with the teammate of her nightmares, the free-spirited Hli, who put liquid soap in the cafeteria dishwasher just to see what would happen. Together they use Aubrey’s meticulous catalog of sky photos – one taken for every day of her father’s absence – to discover a new type of cloud, win the competition and appear on TV. Will it be enough to bring her father home, or will Aubrey have to find the love she desperately needs another way?
